I have never been so terrified in all my life and have scarcely slept a wink. I stay in bed through breakfast but manage to get dressed in the late morning, and after a few bites of bread and cheese, I return to my room. I’m so exhausted that I feel like a lead weight, but if I close my eyes, I will relive the terror in the alley.

I cut this from the next day’s Nevada State Journal:

Sunday, October 18, 1931, Reno, Nevada—Roberto Gonzalez of Mexico City was found shot to death in the alley behind the Bank Club shortly after 11:00 p.m. Friday. No witnesses have come forward. Gonzalez appears to have died from a single gunshot to the chest. Shortly before, he had left the Owl Club on Commercial Row after a large win at the blackjack table. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Reno Police Department.

Madeline and I stay at the ranch for the rest of the day and the next to recover from Friday night’s ordeal. The quiet and peacefulness here assuage my jitters and reduce my constant revisiting of the look on Mr. Gonzalez’s face. For the time being, I restow my suitcases under my bed, resolving to stay out of Reno alleys. On Thursday, I will reach the halfway mark of my stay, and please, God, may I retain my determination to stay my course.
